Description
Drip-feed approaches to Professional Development are often more effective than a one-off session. It allows time to embed learnings within the practice context. Using the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) online modules as the theoretical content, Educators engage with the material over the whole year. Online modules are complimented by a termly in person meeting to review learnings and link theory to practice and children/families attending your service.

Thoughts from Educators
Amelia has taken us through Trauma Responsive Practice modules from Australian Childhood Foundation. As the content is quite heavy, she leads us through the content and refers us to practical ways to implement these. One example: Amelia brought along the Trauma Expression and Connection Assessment, a tool on the ACF website. In light of the theory we were learning, Amelia asked us to think of a child we teach who is from a trauma background and do the assessment on them. This tool provides practical strategies for helping individuals, depending on how they come out in the assessment.
We found this extremely useful; it meant that we didn’t have to search through the website and locate this tool for ourselves, and we could immediately understand the reasoning behind it from the theory we had learned. Each time we meet with Amelia she has something extra to add to our theory, and we can talk through individual situations with Amelia to get her input.
